CENTRE FOR GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH:  A COMMITMENT TO QUALITY RESEARCH, STRATEGIC ANALYTICS AND OBJECTIVE OPINION

Agriculture

Agriculture is considered as the backbone of civilisation and growth of nations. Long-term sustainability of mankind is tied to food-security, which must remain affordable. However, increasing population, shrinking size of arable land and fragmented farming has put land and water resources under stress. Agriculture productivity must increase without losing sustainability of resources, which requires efficient and effective management of resource base. But, at the same time farming must not become unviable economic activity rendering the living conditions of producers of food become worse. This is a challenge faced by research community and governments alike. It has become essential to develop new technologies, high yield variety of seeds, and efficient and economical use of agriculture land and inputs such as water, fertilizer and pesticides. There is also emphasis on organic agriculture, which is motivated by increasing demand on healthy food.

CGDR sees need for analysing enormous number of issues at the ground level, which can be summarised at macro level that include:

  • Area Yield and Production
  • Irrigation and water management
  • Land use and land ownership
  • Cultivation costs and prices
  • Food Security
  • Official Procurement and distribution
  • Storage infrastructure
  • Crop insurance
  • Contract Farming
  • Agriculture markets
  • Agriculture Financing
  • Agriculture Information Technology
  • Modernisation and Green Revolution
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Cooperative movement
  • Agriculture Policy Reforms
